A bridge between history and aviation stands before us. It’s more than just a library. This is the Schlessman Family Branch Library.

Opened in March 2002 the Schlessman Family Branch Library replaced the Montclair Branch. The Montclair Branch closed in January of that same year. This modern facility quickly became a community hub. It stands as the second most popular Denver Public Library location after the Central Library.

The Schlessman Family Branch Library’s creation was a true community effort. The Schlessman family donated a million dollars. This generous gift was combined with bond issue money and funds from the Ross Trust.

Michael Brendle designed the Schlessman Family Branch Library. Brendle also directed the 1993 remodel of the Ross Cherry Creek Branch. He also remodeled the University Hills Branch in 1995. His vision for Schlessman was unique. He wanted to create a bridge. This bridge would connect the adjacent historic neighborhoods. It would also recognize the aviation history of the former Lowry Air Force Base.

Inside the Schlessman Family Branch Library you can see the Lowry Trios. These are 12 painted panels. Artist Stephen Batura created the Lowry Trios. The paintings are based on historic photos of the area.

The Schlessman Family Branch Library is designed to serve everyone. Families with children can find resources here. Singles and married couples can explore new interests. Immigrants can access valuable services. Seniors can connect with their community. The library’s collections and programs reflect this diversity.

The Schlessman Family Branch Library has undergone renovations as of January 20, 2025. These renovations aim to reimagine service points for technology. The renovations also want to improve community rooms. New arrangements will provide flexible learning spaces. The children’s area will be redesigned. New arrangements are planned for computers. There will be mobile device access. The library will also get exterior improvements.

The Schlessman Family Branch Library is more than just a building. It is a testament to community. It represents a commitment to literacy and learning. It is a bridge to the future. Its story continues to unfold. Every book borrowed and every program attended adds a new chapter.
