Wasn’t this once called Schleidenpark? Schleidenpark a green oasis in the heart of Hamburg-Barmbek-Süd. Imagine strolling through its carefully planned pathways. It opened in 1903-04 a haven for workers in a burgeoning neighborhood. It wasn’t just a park though. It was a deliberate design. Two ponds connected by a charming waterfall. A circular children’s playground. They called them “Brezelwege” pretzel paths. A playful twist on nature. A park warden ensured order and cleanliness. He even had his own quaint little house. The Schleidenpark was the first public park in a Hamburg working-class district. A testament to the city’s commitment to green spaces even then. The park was named after Matthias Jakob Schleiden a renowned Hamburg botanist. His name was honored in the surrounding streets Schleidenplatz and Schleidenstraße. World War II took a toll on Schleidenpark. Fuel shortages led to the felling of many trees. The post-war era brought changes. In 1947 the area was renamed Biedermannplatz. A tribute to Adolf Biedermann a social democrat who once lived nearby. His death remains shrouded in mystery perhaps a victim of Nazi violence. Despite the official name change many still call it Schleidenpark. A testament to its enduring legacy. It stands as a reminder of Hamburg’s history. A green space with a rich past. A vibrant story etched into its very soil. Now isn’t this Schleidenpark a wonderful place?
