In the shadow of the Landeskrone, the village of Schlauroth rests. It whispers tales of cunning Romans and pursuing Germans. Schlauroth first appeared in records in 1285 as “Villa Slurath juxta Landiscrone”. The name itself hints at a clever escape. A band of defeated Romans, fleeing a battle, supposedly tricked their pursuers here. They reversed their horseshoes. This led the Germans up the Landeskrone, while the Romans slipped away in the opposite direction. This tale of trickery gave the valley the name, “Tal der schlauen Rotte”. This translates to “Valley of the cunning band”, or “Schlaurottal”. Over time, this clever ruse imprinted itself on the village nestled within, giving us the name Schlauroth. The village officially became part of Görlitz in 1994. Despite this, Schlauroth retains its unique charm. Before joining Görlitz, Schlauroth briefly partnered with Pfaffendorf. From 1972 to 1984 they formed the combined community of Pfaffendorf-Schlauroth. In 2010, Schlauroth celebrated its 725th anniversary, a testament to its enduring spirit. A devastating event occurred in 2014 when three houses were flooded after a severe thunderstorm. Today, Schlauroth boasts a population of around 400, according to 2023 figures. It has seen a steady rise in inhabitants since 1995, defying the trend of many other villages. The spirit of community thrives here, evident in the establishment of the local heritage society in 2013. You can explore the “Kirchweg”, a restored walking path offering breathtaking views. Take a moment to appreciate the “Bienenlehrpfad”, a bee learning path, also located on the Kirchweg. Schlauroth offers more than just scenic beauty. It offers a glimpse into a rich history, shaped by cunning strategies and community resilience.
