Here stands the Schlacht am Walserfeld War memorial. Its simple yet powerful design speaks volumes. It commemorates a pivotal battle. This battle reshaped Salzburg’s destiny.

The Schlacht am Walserfeld was a clash of immense proportions. Around 60000 soldiers from Napoleonic France faced off against 43000 Austro-Hungarian troops. This happened from December 12 to 14 1800. The young inexperienced Archduke Johann led the Austrian forces. His opponent was the seasoned General Jean-Victor Moreau. The battle was fierce. Casualties were staggering. Over 22000 men were killed wounded or missing. Around 10000 French and 12000 Austrians perished.

Despite initial Austrian advantages they were forced to retreat. The French ultimately prevailed. Their victory secured Napoleon’s control over Salzburg. This was the largest military conflict ever fought on Salzburg soil. Even today remnants of that war can be found in the Walserfeld fields.

The memorial itself is a triptych. A bishop’s staff made of Untersberger marble stands in the center. It symbolizes the Archbishopric of Salzburg. Two stone wedges flank the staff. They represent the opposing armies. One wedge is Wachauer marble representing the Austrian army. The other wedge is French Napoleon Notre Dame marble symbolizing the French troops. The inscription reads “1800 Gewalt zerstört Erinnerung lehrt Friede vereint 2000”. This is in German and French. It translates to “1800 Violence destroys memory teaches peace unites 2000”.

A separate stone in front of the triptych further commemorates the event and its memorial’s creation in 2000. Stone mason Bernhard Hasenöhrl created this memorial commissioned by the Wals-Siezenheim community. This memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the past. It inspires reflection on the cost of war. It also underscores the enduring importance of peace.
