Gazing at the Schildhorndenkmal, have you ever wondered about the stories etched into its weathered stone? This unassuming monument, perched on the Schildhorn peninsula in Berlin’s Grunewald forest, holds a tale of dramatic escapes, religious conversions, and royal patronage. The Schildhorndenkmal commemorates Jaczo, the last Slavic prince of Köpenick. Legend says he fled across the Havel River at this very spot in 1157, pursued by Albrecht the Bear, founder of the Mark Brandenburg. Facing certain death in the turbulent waters, Jaczo cried out to the Christian God, a deity he had previously scorned. Miraculously, he reached the shore safely. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Jaczo converted to Christianity, leaving his shield and sword hanging on a tree as a testament to his newfound faith. This act, so the story goes, gave Schildhorn, meaning “shield horn,” its name. The actual Schildhorndenkmal we see today is a relatively recent reconstruction. The original monument, commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia, was built in 1845. The king, a romantic at heart, envisioned a series of monuments to bring life to the historical landscapes of Brandenburg. He provided his own sketches for the Schildhorndenkmal to architect Friedrich August Stüler, who refined the design into the striking structure we see before us. The monument, crafted from Silesian sandstone, takes the form of a stylized tree stump, complete with sculpted branches. A bronze shield, symbolic of Jaczo’s offering, hangs midway up the pillar. The monument is crowned by an equal-armed cross, a symbol of Jaczo’s conversion. Interestingly, the original monument, destroyed in 1945, stood on a lower plinth. The reconstruction in 1954 was placed higher, giving it more prominence amidst the growing trees. Ironically, today the Schildhorndenkmal is somewhat hidden, tucked away amongst the foliage, a quiet sentinel guarding a captivating legend.
