How did this unassuming Texas town get its unusual name? Here in Schertz, a city steeped in history and shaped by the dreams of settlers, we uncover a tale of resilience and growth. Schertz stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its founders. The story of Schertz began not on American soil, but in Alsace Lorraine, France. Joseph and Anna Schertz, seeking a better life for their family, set sail for Texas in 1843, lured by the promise of affordable land and higher wages. Their journey was fraught with challenges, marked by tragedy and hardship. They lost loved ones to illness and faced the harsh realities of broken promises upon arriving in Texas. They eventually found their way to New Braunfels, welcomed by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels who offered them a fresh start.

Sebastian Schertz, one of the sons, later purchased land in Guadalupe County in 1849, laying the foundation for what would become Schertz. The land, initially known as “Cut-Off” due to frequent flooding of Cibolo Creek, transformed into a hub of agricultural activity. Sebastian established a cotton gin in 1870, attracting more settlers and solidifying the town’s economic backbone. The arrival of the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railroad in 1876, connecting Schertz to the outside world, marked a turning point. Sebastian, a savvy entrepreneur, operated a general store near the newly built railroad, further enhancing the town’s growth.

The town officially adopted the name Schertz in 1899, a tribute to the family whose vision and perseverance helped shape its destiny. Schertz continued to flourish, with the Schertz family playing an active role in its development. From establishing a reliable water supply system to donating land for schools, their contributions resonated through generations. Today, Schertz stands as a thriving city, a testament to the hard work and resilience of its early settlers. The legacy of the Schertz family is woven into the fabric of this community. As you stroll through Schertz, remember the journey of the Schertz family. Their story is a reminder that from humble beginnings, great things can grow. They transformed hardship into opportunity, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape Schertz today.
