Beneath the bustling streets of Hamburg lies a hidden marvel. This is the Schellfischtunnel a testament to Hamburg’s rich industrial past.

The Schellfischtunnel isn’t just any tunnel. It’s a 961-meter-long railway tunnel. Once a vital artery of Altona’s vibrant fishing port. It connected Altona station to the Elbe’s docks. Its nickname the Schellfischtunnel or Haddock Tunnel speaks volumes. The majority of freight carried was fish.

Before the tunnel’s construction goods were transported on a steep 210-meter inclined plane. This plane with its 15 percent incline used a horse-powered then steam-powered winch. Imagine the sheer effort it took to move heavy cargo up that slope. The tunnel dramatically improved efficiency. It opened in 1876 replacing that labor-intensive system.

The original tunnel was 395 meters long. However an expansion was necessary. In 1895 Altona’s main station moved. The tunnel had to be extended to its current length of 961 meters.

The Schellfischtunnel continued to serve its purpose for many decades. It even served as an unofficial air raid shelter during World War II. Providing refuge from the devastating bombing campaigns. Then in 1911 the tunnel was electrified. This allowed for more efficient transport of fish and other goods.

However times changed. The last commercial user Transthermos left in 1992. The railway line ceased operation. The south portal was sealed with an iron gate. Fear of collapse led to restrictions on the roads above. The tunnel was eventually reinforced. This was more cost-effective than demolition or infilling.

Today the Schellfischtunnel remains a fascinating piece of Hamburg’s industrial heritage. It’s a reminder of the city’s past and its innovative solutions. Though closed to rail traffic it’s still accessible. Guided tours allow the public to explore this historical treasure. A tangible link to a bygone era of Hamburg’s bustling port life. The sound of passing trains from the nearby S-Bahn lines still echoes through the old structure. A ghostly reminder of its vibrant past. The Schellfischtunnel’s story is one of innovation and resilience a powerful symbol of Hamburg’s rich history.
