The Scheffeleck wasn’t just a pretty face. The ground floor housed the Cafe-Restaurant zum Scheffeleck. This became a popular local spot. People flocked there for a delightful escape from the city. Imagine the lively atmosphere before the First World War. Military concerts were regularly held here for a small fee. The Scheffelgarten the restaurant’s adjacent garden added to its charm. A grand double concert took place on May 10 1896 to celebrate peace. The Grossherzoglich Hessisches Leib-Dragoner-Regiment No 24 and Grossherzoglich Hessisches Infanterie-Regiment No 118 performed. The garden was illuminated beautifully adding to the festive ambience. The event was a precursor to today’s Palmengarten light festival.
Sadly times changed. The restaurant closed in 1926. The Scheffelgarten disappeared completely by 1935 as reported in the press. Three-story apartment buildings replaced the beloved garden. The Scheffeleck though remains. It still stands tall a silent witness to Frankfurt’s changing landscape. Its top floor was altered post-war a flat fifth story replacing the original roofline.
Yet the Scheffeleck holds its own. Even today its beautiful sandstone facade stands out. The building continues to tell the story of Frankfurt’s past.
