The largest independent theater in Austria awaits. Welcome to the Schauspielhaus Salzburg.

Picture this: 1958. A fledgling theater company the Elisabethbühne began its journey in the cellars of the Elisabeth Church. These humble beginnings were far from the grand stage it occupies today. They performed challenging works of world literature. A small group of dedicated actors including a young Branko Samarovski laid the foundation for this remarkable institution.

This wasn’t just any amateur troupe. Georges Müller a former opera singer from the Hamburg State Opera led the charge. He brought a level of professionalism and artistic ambition previously unseen in Salzburg’s amateur theater scene. Their dedication transformed the Elisabethbühne into a force to be reckoned with.

Fast forward to 1995. The Elisabethbühne found a new home. The Petersbrunnhof a former manor house of St Peter’s Abbey in Salzburg’s Nonntal district became its stage. This historic building dating back to the Middle Ages underwent extensive renovations. The result? A state-of-the-art theater retaining its historical charm. The classical arches of the columned foyer became a hub for readings openings and exhibitions.

In 2004 the theater officially changed its name to the Schauspielhaus Salzburg. This marked a significant milestone in its evolution from a small group of ambitious actors into a major cultural force.

The Schauspielhaus Salzburg is more than just a stage. It boasts two stages a production house with workshops rehearsal stages and even its own acting school. The school integrates its students into the theater’s repertoire. The theater supports contemporary playwriting and commissions new plays annually. It has even toured throughout Austria. It stages about 400 performances yearly with remarkably affordable ticket prices.

Robert Pienz served as the managing intendant for many years. He oversaw many successful productions. He helped cement the Schauspielhaus Salzburg’s status as Austria’s largest independent theater.

Today the Schauspielhaus Salzburg continues to thrive. With roughly 70 full-time employees and 60000 visitors annually it is a vibrant hub of artistic creation and cultural exchange. Its legacy speaks to the power of perseverance dedication and a deep commitment to the arts. The Schauspielhaus Salzburg is indeed a testament to the enduring spirit of theater itself. This is a story of transformation growth and artistic excellence.
