Built in 1965 the Schätzelberg-Grundschule stands proudly. Its buildings and grounds were constructed on a former allotment garden. This vibrant school in the Mariendorf district of Berlin’s Tempelhof-Schöneberg borough is more than just a place of learning. It’s a testament to community spirit and musical passion.
The Schätzelberg-Grundschule’s name is a nod to the Schätzelberge. This is a largely forgotten local name for a slight rise in the land south of the Teltow Canal. The name survives today only in a nearby allotment association and a street. The school itself was never actually on Schätzelbergstrasse.
For a time in the 1980s dwindling student numbers led to its closure. The building then served as a music school. In 1996 external classes from nearby elementary schools began using it again.
August 1997 saw the Schätzelberg-Grundschule reopen. It reopened as an elementary school with a special focus on music. This continued the site’s musical tradition. Many students and teachers came from the overcrowded Ludwig-Heck-Grundschule.
In 2005 the school began a collaboration with the Landesmusikakademie Berlin. This collaboration trained string teachers. Today around 320 students attend the Schätzelberg-Grundschule. It is an open all-day school. Students can receive additional support and care from 6 am to 6 pm.
The Schätzelberg-Grundschule’s musical emphasis is a significant part of its identity. In addition to regular music classes children receive extra instrumental lessons. They participate in ensemble playing. Instruments are provided for a small fee.
This music program is part of a citywide initiative. This initiative started in 1975. It currently operates in fifteen Berlin elementary schools. The program is designed to help children’s overall development. It promotes creativity concentration and overall performance. It also fosters a positive social environment.
The Schätzelberg-Grundschule offers a wide range of instruments. These instruments include violin viola cello guitar recorder flute keyboard and percussion. The school has several ensembles. These ensembles include choirs string groups an orchestra and groups for various other instruments.
Musical training begins in the first grade. Students sing play and dance. In second grade they explore different instruments before choosing one. The Schätzelberg-Grundschule regularly performs at various events. These events include concerts at the Berlin Philharmonic and the Rundkirche in Neu-Tempelhof. They also take part in district events and their own school events.
The Schätzelberg-Grundschule also offers extracurricular activities. These activities include theater acrobatics soccer self-defense for girls volleyball and math puzzles. A parent-teacher association supports school events projects and materials. This association also helps fund class trips and music instrument repairs. The school is a vibrant part of the community. It’s a place where learning thrives and music flourishes.
