Hidden in the woods above the Kronenburg ruins lies a mystery. It’s called the Schanze Kronenburg, an enigmatic fortification. What secrets does this earthwork hold? The Schanze Kronenburg sits 270 meters east-northeast of the Kronenburg’s eastern moat. It’s roughly 30 by 30 meters in size. A ditch, rampart, and a second ditch protect it from the hillside. This setup and distance from the Kronenburg suggest its purpose. It may have been a siege work. Perhaps during the Lorscher Fehde around 1130, attackers used this spot. Imagine the tension as forces clashed below. Could this have been a platform for a catapult, hurling stones at the Kronenburg? Excavations at the Kronenburg have uncovered a large catapult stone, hinting at such warfare. Sadly, a modern mountain bike trail now cuts through the Schanze Kronenburg, disturbing this historical site.
