Leaping from the fountain’s edge, the lead sheep beckons. These are the Schaapjes Sculpture. The locals often call them Lammetjes. This bronze sculpture group has stood as an icon of Osdorpplein since 1966. Gerrit Bolhuis created these delightful figures. He captured a moment of playful rebellion.
Gerrit Bolhuis was a renowned artist. He even won the Prix de Rome in 1934. This prize is the oldest and most prestigious award for young Dutch artists and architects. Bolhuis expertly captured the spirit of Amsterdam’s Nieuw-West district.
The Schaapjes Sculpture tells a story. It illustrates the Dutch saying, “Als er één schaap over de dam is, volgen er meer”. This translates to “If one sheep crosses the dam, more will follow”. The lead sheep embodies this spirit. It boldly jumps off the wall. The last sheep has already stumbled.
Originally, the Schaapjes were part of a fountain and paddling pool. Mayor Gijsbert van Hall opened the Osdorpplein shopping center in 1964. The fountain was functional then. But Bolhuis’s sculpture was added in 1966. He had previously created the Bokkenrijder sculpture. That one is in the Oosterpark. Later he would create Schaap met vijf poten in Osdorp.
Look closely at the sheep. Seven of the eight Schaapjes stand firmly. They all make contact with the ground. But one sheep is frozen mid-air. It captures the dynamism.
Children adore these sculptures. The Schaapjes glisten. Constant touching polishes their snouts, ears and backs. The city regularly cleans the bronze. This preserves the artwork. It also ensures the sheep remain inviting.
The Schaapjes served as a meeting place. They also provided a play area for children. Parents could shop. Children could play. The Schaapjes Sculpture became integral to community life in Osdorp.
Bolhuis understood how to connect art with people. He invited interaction. His sculptures became beloved landmarks. The Schaapjes embodies this philosophy. It encourages playfulness. It inspires a sense of community.
Next time you’re at Osdorpplein, take a moment. Observe the Schaapjes Sculpture. Feel the smooth bronze. Imagine the laughter. The Schaapjes will continue to charm. They represent a community spirit.
