Doesn’t that golden pyramidal roof atop the main tower catch your eye here at SCB Park Plaza? It is quite a sight. SCB Park Plaza is a high-rise complex in Bangkok’s Chatuchak District. It is more than just an office space. It is a landmark.

Completed in 1996, SCB Park Plaza houses the headquarters of Siam Commercial Bank. The complex also offers office spaces and retail outlets. This makes it a vibrant hub for business and leisure.

SCB Park Plaza occupies a large area of 52 rai on Ratchadaphisek Road. Its location is near the Ratchayothin Intersection. Robert G. Boughey, an American architect based in Thailand, designed it. The construction took four years. It cost around 10 billion baht which was 400 million US dollars at that time.

Back then, SCB Park Plaza was ahead of its time. It was among the first buildings in Thailand to use intelligent systems for energy efficiency. The development of an entire complex as a single project was also unique.

SCB Park Plaza comprises three building groups. The main tower has 37 storeys. Look for the golden pyramidal roof. An adjoining section has 24 storeys. SCB Park Plaza West includes two buildings with 12 and 21 storeys. Finally, SCB Park Plaza East features two buildings of 21 and 5 storeys.

Each building group rises above a connected retail podium. Underground parking serves all buildings. Triangular forms dominate the design. All glass curtain-walled buildings have triangular grid floor plans. A large triangular skylight covers the main building’s atrium.

Siam Commercial Bank’s headquarters are located here. The bank underwent renovations in the 2010s. Several other corporations also have offices here. Unilever’s Thailand headquarters were here until 2015.

SCB Park Plaza aimed to create an integrated city environment. Its podium mall has many shops and restaurants. It is a popular destination for those who live and work nearby.

Not all stories are happy ones. High-profile accidents occurred here in 2015 and 2016. A fire in February 2015 damaged three floors. Sadly, one firefighter died. In March 2016, a chemical accident killed eight people. These were contractors and a security guard. They serviced a fire-suppression system in a document vault.

SCB Park Plaza stands as a testament to architectural innovation. It showcases commercial ambition. Despite past tragedies, it remains a significant landmark in Bangkok. It continues to evolve. It adapts to the changing needs of the city.
