Tucked away in Gravesend Brooklyn lies Police Officer John G. Scarangella Park. This park stands as a testament to community and sacrifice. Today we will explore its story.
John Gerard Scarangella was born into a large Italian immigrant family. He grew up in Brooklyn. Scarangella graduated from the adjacent Lafayette High School. As a child he actively participated in Police Athletic League programs. Little did he know he would become a police officer.
In 1969 John G. Scarangella joined the New York City Police Department. Three of his siblings followed suit. Scarangella served with dedication for 12 years.
On April 16 1981 Scarangella and his partner spotted a suspicious van. It matched the description of one used in several burglaries. They pursued the van. The van stopped suddenly. Two occupants jumped out and opened fire. They shot the officers through the windshield. Though wounded Officer Richard Rainey radioed for help. Officer Scarangella was severely injured.
Tragically Officer Scarangella died from his wounds on May 1 1981. The suspects were later apprehended. They were convicted of murder. They received a sentence of 25 years to life.
In 1992 the Lafayette High School Playground was renamed. It became the John G. Scarangella Playground. This renaming honored his memory. It recognized his service to the community.
This park provides a space for recreation. It offers a place for reflection. The park was originally acquired by the city in 1929 and 1930. It became parkland shortly thereafter. In 1935 the Department of Parks opened a new playground here. It featured a wading pool and play apparatus. The Works Progress Administration helped to create it.
The playground underwent renovation in 1997. Today Scarangella Park continues to serve the community. It stands as a living memorial.
