Listen closely. The Sawtelle Veterans Chapel stands before you a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of American veterans. This isn’t just any chapel. It’s a unique multi-denominational sanctuary. Two chapels under one roof. One for Catholics the other for Protestants.

Built in 1900 the chapel was designed by J Lee Burton. It served the veterans of the Sawtelle Veterans Home. This home a sprawling complex established in 1887 was initially for Civil War veterans. Later it opened its doors to veterans of all wars.

Imagine the scene. Veterans from across the country. Finding solace in this very place. A place of worship that accommodated both Catholic and Protestant faiths simultaneously. A thick interior wall separated the two. This ensured neither faith felt slighted in access or scheduling.

The chapel wasn’t just for religious services. It hosted weddings. It offered substance abuse counseling. It served as a location for funeral rites for veterans and community members alike. A true center of life and faith.

The 1971 Sylmar earthquake damaged the chapel. It has remained closed ever since. Yet its structure remains largely intact. Inside are many original elements. A poignant reminder of its past glory.

Today a non-profit organization Wadsworth Chapel Heritage Partners is working to restore the chapel. They plan to create a Center for Moral Injury. This will address the emotional and spiritual wounds of war. It is designed to promote the wellbeing of veterans and their families.

The Sawtelle Veterans Chapel is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of faith. It represents the enduring strength of those who served. It’s a story etched in stone and waiting to be rediscovered. A story of hope healing and the profound gratitude of a nation.
