Lights dim. Let me tell you about Hamburg’s Savoy-Filmtheater. It stands as a testament to cinematic history and a beacon for film lovers. The Savoy-Filmtheater first opened its doors in the 1950s. Some say that time has stood still within its walls.

Step inside the Savoy-Filmtheater. You are transported to a world of vintage flair. Imagine big screens, red cinema seats and classic curtains. Enjoy a long drink with popcorn. Watch a brand-new Hollywood movie in its original version.

The Savoy-Filmtheater is not just any cinema. It is one of the most famous traditional cinemas in Hamburg. The movie program mainly consists of original films. Highlights of the English theatre scene are also shown. Some even feature well-known star casts.

In 1957, a new kind of theatre experience emerged in Europe. The successful Todd-AO process defined new standards. It used large format 70mm film and a big curved screen. The Savoy-Filmtheater was the very first cinema purpose-built for Todd-AO. It opened on March 14, 1957.

Nearly 60 years later the Savoy-Filmtheater still exists. It has survived several closures and near threats of demolition. Thanks to cinema entrepreneur Hans-Joachim Flebbe, the Savoy reopened on June 19, 2013. It is now a Premium Movie Theater. Flebbe has searched for a suitable venue for his Premium Movie Theatre concept.

But that’s not all. The Savoy-Filmtheater shows the latest Hollywood films. The Savoy Sneak Preview takes place on Fridays. Be surprised by which yet-to-be-released film fills the auditorium. Savoy Film Club Specials bring back well-known classics. Lèon and popular film series are shown. Terminator theme days are special. Friends of classical theatre get their money’s worth. The Savoy regularly shows productions of English plays. Hamlet from the London National Theatre screened with Benedict Cumberbatch. Some films are shown in German for those who don’t speak English. Thrifty savers can enjoy a selected film in German for only €6. It’s every first and third Wednesday of the month at 11 a.m.

Visitors also appreciate the wide range of drinks at the bar. Classic hot and cold drinks are available. A qualitative long drink selection is also available. The cinema technology is state-of-the-art. One of Hamburg’s largest cinema screens ensures that no detail escapes you. The seats in the first row are not unpopular. Here you can see the hustle and bustle on the screen lying in cosy loungers.

The Savoy-Filmtheater has been totally renovated. The former CinemaxX architect, Heinz-Jürgen Schuhmacher led the project. The auditorium is impressive with a high level of comfort. The cinema accommodates 284 visitors in total. There are 94 seats in the “Loge” and 190 seats in the stalls. The seats have adjustable backs. Some recline almost to a lying position with pop-up footrests. There is plenty of legroom everywhere. The seats in the front row are of chaise longue design.

The Savoy-Filmtheater is more than just a cinema. It is a place where memories are made. It is a place where you can escape into another world.
