Inaugurated in 2005, the Swaminarayan Akshardham complex was built in merely five years. This feat was made possible through the blessings of Pramukh Swami Maharaj and the efforts of 11000 artisans and volunteers.
The Swaminarayan Akshardham Mandir is the heart of the complex. It rises to 43 meters. It stretches 96 meters wide and extends 109 meters long. The Mandir is carved with flora, fauna, dancers, musicians, and deities. It stands on the banks of the Yamuna River.
The Swaminarayan Akshardham was designed by BAPS Swamis and Virendra Trivedi. It is constructed from Rajasthani pink sandstone and Italian Carrara marble. The design follows ancient Hindu architectural guidelines. It uses no ferrous metal. This means no steel or concrete supports. The architecture draws inspiration from the Maru-Gurjara style.
Inside, you will find 234 carved pillars. Nine domes adorn the ceiling. Over 20000 murtis depict swamis, devotees, and acharyas. At the base, the Gajendra Pith pays tribute to the elephant. It features 148 life-sized elephants weighing 3000 tons.
Under the central dome sits a 3.4-meter murti of Swaminarayan. He is seated in abhayamudra. Images of gurus surround him. Each murti consists of five metals. The temple also houses murtis of Sita-Rama, Radha-Krishna, Shiva-Parvati, and Lakshmi-Narayana.
But Swaminarayan Akshardham offers more than just the Mandir. Explore the Sahajanand Darshan, the Hall of Values. Lifelike robotics and dioramas tell stories from Swaminarayan’s life.
