A poignant reminder stands before us. This is Säule Bieruner Platz a memorial in Freiburg im Breisgau. It’s a place of quiet reflection a space dedicated to remembrance. It wasn’t always a memorial square. In the heart of Freiburg a grand synagogue once stood tall. Built between 1870 and 1885 it was one of Germany’s largest synagogues. Its architecture was a beautiful blend of Romanesque Revival and Moorish influences. It reflected Freiburg’s rich multicultural past.

Sadly that past was brutally interrupted. During Kristallnacht in November 1938 the synagogue was tragically set ablaze. Nazi paramilitary forces destroyed this magnificent building. The ruins remained until 1940 when they were finally demolished. The site became a silent testament to the horrors of that night.

For almost fifty years the site lay empty. Debates raged over its future. In 1987 the city finally decided to transform it into a memorial square. A powerful symbol the Eternal Flame fountain was installed. It marks the spot where the synagogue’s altar once stood. The flame burns continuously representing eternal remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust. Bronze plaques embedded in the paving stones outline the synagogue’s original footprint. You can still see where the walls once stood.

The square has evolved into a vibrant community space. Extensive renovations between 2015 and 2017 transformed it. It now features green spaces modern water features and artistic sculptures. It’s a place where community events take place. Open-air concerts food markets and sports screenings bring life to the square.

Säule Bieruner Platz is more than just a beautiful urban space. It’s a living memorial. It honors the victims of the past while celebrating the resilience and vibrancy of the Freiburg community. Let us take a moment of quiet contemplation here. Let’s remember those lost and honor the lessons learned. As we continue our tour reflect on the powerful story of this site.
