What if these walls could talk? They’ve seen generations of Saugus High School students walk these halls. Saugus High School isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the town’s history. From humble beginnings in the town hall and Roby School its story is woven into Saugus itself.

For years Saugus High School resided on Central and Winter Streets. It expanded many times to keep up with a growing student body. The 1906 building later served as a junior high and elementary school. A devastating 1963 arson destroyed much of it. Only a 1935 addition survived. This section remained an elementary school until 2003.

Then came 1955. A new Saugus High School opened. It boasted a cafeteria an auditorium offices classrooms and a gymnasium. This single-story building stood for decades educating countless students. It finally gave way in 2020 to a new sports complex.

The current Saugus Middle-High School complex opened in 2020. It’s a state-of-the-art facility. This impressive complex houses both Saugus High School and Saugus Middle School. It has room for 1360 students. High schoolers moved in during April 2020. The building’s design even references the town’s history. The curved lightwells mirror the blast furnaces of the Saugus Iron Works.

Saugus High School isn’t without its drama. In 1914 students struck to support their principal. An English teacher faced controversy in 1937. In 1981 the entire student body walked out to protest budget cuts. The school also weathered bomb threats and lockdowns. These events shaped the school’s identity. They reveal the resilience and spirit of the Saugus community.

Notable alumni include a Medal of Honor recipient. Many successful politicians and athletes graduated from Saugus High School. Even Elizabeth Bishop the famous poet attended though she didn’t graduate.

Saugus High School’s story isn’t finished. It continues to shape young lives. It remains a cornerstone of Saugus. This magnificent institution holds a vibrant past. It promises an even brighter future for generations to come. Let us remember that every brick every classroom every event contributes to this rich history. And you are a part of that story now.
