In 2008, a transformation occurred at the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) in Riyadh. The Saudi Council of Ministers recognized the growing importance of tourism and the vital role of national heritage. They decided to merge the National Heritage and Museums sector into the existing Supreme Commission for Tourism, thus creating the SCTA as we know it today. This pivotal moment signaled the Kingdom’s commitment to preserving its rich past while embracing its future in tourism. The SCTA’s mandate was clear: to organize, develop, and promote tourism while simultaneously safeguarding Saudi Arabia’s invaluable heritage. The commission embarked on an ambitious program, initiating over 125 projects designed to bolster the tourism sector. These included the development of a comprehensive national tourism strategy, regional tourism plans, and initiatives to address social, institutional, and financial hurdles. The SCTA’s vision extended beyond mere economics. They recognized the ethical, social, and civilizational dimensions of tourism. They aimed to involve the entire Saudi society in shaping a tourism sector that reflected the Kingdom’s unique values and traditions. This commitment to cultural authenticity became a cornerstone of the SCTA’s approach. They wanted to create a tourism experience that resonated with the Kingdom’s role in human civilization and its impact on the international community. One tangible outcome of this vision was the “Saudi Archaeological Masterpieces through the Ages” exhibition. Launched in 2018, this exhibition showcased 400 rare artifacts, offering the world a glimpse into Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage. The exhibition, which toured internationally, stemmed from a suggestion by former French President Jacques Chirac during his 2006 visit to Saudi Arabia. It underscored the SCTA’s dedication to sharing the Kingdom’s story with the world. The SCTA also understood the importance of human capital. Through its Takamul program, the commission has trained thousands of young Saudis in tourism management and operations, ensuring that the future of Saudi tourism rests in capable hands. This forward-thinking approach reflects the SCTA’s commitment to sustainable growth and development in the tourism sector. The Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities stands as a testament to Saudi Arabia’s vision for a future where tourism and heritage intertwine, enriching both the nation and its visitors.
