Journey back to 1989. A new district is carved from the bustling heart of Yan Nawa. This is the origin story of Sathon. Sathon district. It takes its name from the vital artery that pulses through it. Sathon Road. And before the road, there was the Khlong Sathon. This canal, commissioned by a visionary Chinese entrepreneur, became a key waterway for the city. His contributions were so significant that King Chulalongkorn bestowed upon him the prestigious title of Luang Sathon Racha Yut. This very title, “Sathon,” became the name of the road and later the district itself. Sathon is more than just roads and canals. It houses three distinct sub-districts. Thung Wat Don, Yan Nawa, and Thung Maha Mek each contribute to Sathon’s unique character. Within its boundaries lie important institutions. The Department of Airports of Thailand, the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, and the Bangkok Dock Company all call Sathon home. Sathon isn’t just about business. It is a vibrant hub of culture and history. The iconic Wat Yannawa temple, with its unique junk-shaped chedi, stands as a testament to King Rama III’s ingenuity. This architectural marvel was designed to preserve the memory of the Chinese junk ships that once plied the river. Sathon also holds hidden gems like Wat Don. This temple, built in 1797, welcomes those seeking solace and connection to the past. Nearby lies the Wat Don Cemetery, a resting place for those of Chinese heritage. And for those seeking diverse spiritual experiences, Sathon offers the Hindu Dharma Sabha Association. This temple, also known as Wat Vishnu, is one of Bangkok’s oldest Hindu temples. It houses idols of all major Hindu gods. Sathon. A district born from ambition, shaped by history, and vibrant with life.
