Marvel at these ancient stones. We are standing before the Sarcofagi di Rodano. These sarcophagi were recovered from the farms of Rodano. Now, they are displayed in front of the Municipio in Lucino.

Dating these sarcophagi is difficult. Experts can’t link them to other remains. Similar sarcophagi feature a double-sloping roof. They are adorned with acroteria. These typically date back to the Late Roman period from the 4th to 5th century AD or the Early Middle Ages from the 6th to 7th century.

Older Roman sarcophagi from the 2nd to 3rd centuries often have steeper slopes. Their acroteria are more pronounced. The low lid of the Sarcofagi di Rodano suggests an Early Medieval origin from the 6th to 7th century.

The lids were shaped to better channel water. Tubs and lids of sarcophagi often served other purposes. In modern times they were used as troughs or drainage channels. This is evidenced by outlet holes found in similar discoveries.

The discovery of the Lombard Cross in Rodano is significant. It could help to date the sarcophagi’s creation and use to the 6th and 7th centuries. The Sarcofagi di Rodano offer a tangible link to Rodano’s distant past. They remind us of the people who lived here centuries ago. They invite us to ponder their lives and beliefs.
