Who was Kale Khan? Delhiites may not even know the answer about the namesake of Sarai Kale Khan.
Sarai Kale Khan is an urban village. It is in the South East Delhi district. Once, this area served as a rest stop. It was for travelers on the royal route. The route connected the Mughal courts and Chandni Chowk to Mehrauli. Mehrauli was about 32 km away.
The “Sarai” in Sarai Kale Khan comes from Sher Shah Suri’s time. He built paved roads with roadside inns. These inns or “serais” were every twelve miles. They accommodated travelers.
This Sarai was named after Kale Khan. He was a Sufi saint from the 14th to 15th century. But another story says something different. Nawab Faizullah Beg built a complex. It became known as Ahata Kaley Sahab. It was named after a saint called Kaley Khan who lived there.
Adding to the confusion is Kale Khan’s Gumbad. It stands in the Kotla Mubarakpur Complex in South Delhi. An inscription says it dates back to 1481 AD. This Kale Khan was a courtier under Sultan Bahlol Lodi. So who was the real Kale Khan?
In November 2024 the intersection outside Sarai Kale Khan was renamed Birsa Munda Chowk. It honored the tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda. This renaming commemorated his 150th birth anniversary. The central government renamed it before the 2024 state elections in Jharkhand.
Sarai Kale Khan is now a major transportation hub. The Delhi Metro’s Pink Line connects it to the city. The Inter-State Bus Terminus or ISBT offers bus services to other states. The nearby Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station is also a major railway hub.
The Sarai Kale Khan ISBT helps reduce congestion at the Kashmere Gate ISBT. Construction began in 1996 and finished in 2005. It cost about Rs 80 crore. It is a major bus terminal for buses to Haryana and Rajasthan.
Sarai Kale Khan is not just a transport hub. It also offers places to visit. These include the Vishwa Shanti Stupa and Nila Gumbad. Also the Waste to Wonder Theme Park and Millennium Park are close by.
Sarai Kale Khan has transformed over centuries. From a rest house to a bustling hub. It carries layers of history within its name. It shows Delhi’s ever-changing character.
