Have you heard the story of São Romão de Aregos? I’m going to take you on a journey back in time to a place where history whispers through the stones.
It’s true, this freguesia, this parish, is no longer in existence. But don’t let that diminish its significance. It was an important part of the municipality of Resende, nestled in the district of Viseu.
For centuries, its boundaries were clear, its existence a constant. The people of São Romão de Aregos lived their lives, tilled their fields, and shared stories under the same sky, the same sun. Their lives were entwined with the land.
A small place though it was, São Romão de Aregos held a unique charm. Nestled in a valley, surrounded by hills, there was a sense of serenity that few places could match. Then, on January 28, 2013, the political map of Portugal shifted. This little parish was no more.
Merged with Anreade, what was once São Romão de Aregos became part of a new entity, a new union. What remains? The memories. And the stories.
Today, as we stand here, we can see that the spirit of São Romão de Aregos still lingers. From the echoes of laughter and the scent of woodsmoke, we can almost hear the whispers of the past. Their stories are woven into the fabric of this land.
You can’t walk past the old walls of São Romão de Aregos without feeling a connection to the past. This is a place where history comes alive, where the echoes of forgotten lives still resound.
