Did the ancients foresee the bustling metropolis that Guangzhou would become? Here at the foot of Yuexiu Park, the Sanyuan Palace stands as a testament to a quieter time. A time of emperors and satraps, of Taoist whispers and the scent of incense. Sanyuan Palace is Guangzhou’s oldest and largest Taoist structure, a beacon of tradition amidst the modern cityscape. It has witnessed over 1,600 years of history unfold, surviving dynasties, revolutions, and the relentless march of progress. Originally known as Yuegang Temple, it was built during the Jin Dynasty by a powerful satrap. Later, during the Ming Dynasty, the temple underwent reconstruction and was renamed Sanyuan Palace. This name, meaning “Three Origins Palace,” refers to the three Taoist deities: the Celestial Worthy of the Primordial Beginning, the Celestial Worthy of the Numinous Treasure, and the Celestial Worthy of the Highest Clarity. The palace grounds, encompassing roughly 2,000 square meters, are a tranquil escape from Guangzhou’s vibrant streets. Imagine the rhythmic beat of drums and the chime of bells resonating from the Bell Tower and Drum Tower, flanking the main Sanyuan Hall. Picture the devout moving between the Lao-tzu Palace, the ancestral halls, the dining hall, the guest hall, and the Luzu Palace. Sanyuan Palace isn’t just a place of worship. It hosts lively folk celebrations on the birthdays of the Three Origins, known as Shangyuan, Zhongyuan, and Xiayuan. These festivals fall on the 15th day of the first, seventh, and tenth lunar months, respectively, filling the palace with vibrant energy and traditional rituals.
