Santuario Eucarístico de Adoración

In the heart of Arequipa, nestled between Palacio Viejo and La Merced streets, stands the Santuario Eucarístico de Adoración. This unassuming chapel holds a century of stories within its elegant, neo-gothic facade. It all began in 1920, with a duchess’s loving gesture. Maria Josefa de Goyeneche, seeking to honor her uncle, Bishop José Sebastián de Goyeneche y Barreda, donated her family’s palace. Her wish? To see it transformed into a place of worship and education. Thus began the Santuario Eucarístico de Adoración’s journey. The Esclavas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, a congregation founded by Saint Rafaela Maria Porras, took on the noble task. They established a school and the chapel, both inaugurated in 1924. Over the years, the Santuario Eucarístico de Adoración witnessed the changing tides of time. The school relocated in 1966, finding a new home in Umacollo. The Sacramentinos, another religious order, then assumed stewardship of the chapel until 1989. Finally, it was entrusted to the care of priests from the Archdiocese of Arequipa. In 2004, a significant moment arrived when Archbishop José Paulino Ríos Reynoso bestowed upon it the title of “Santuario Eucarístico de Adoración”. The chapel, now a sanctuary, stands as a testament to enduring faith and a rich past woven into the very fabric of Arequipa.
