Before us stands the Santuario della Madonna Addolorata e di San Bernardo a testament to faith and resilience. This sanctuary wasn’t always the grand structure we see today. In the early 17th century a small church dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows stood here. It was crumbling threatening to disappear.
The people of Mesero yearned for a new sanctuary. They approached the Carthusian monks owners of the land. They requested a plot to build a new church. The monks graciously agreed. By 1612 the Santuario della Madonna Addolorata e di San Bernardo was erected. A gilded wooden altar held a new fresco of the grieving Virgin. The old one remained behind the altar a silent witness to the passage of time.
The Santuario della Madonna Addolorata e di San Bernardo’s Baroque facade boasts four niches. They house statues of saints. The single-nave interior features two side chapels. The right chapel holds an artistic wooden crucifix dating back to the late 17th century. The left chapel is dedicated to Saint Bruno. His wooden statue resides in a niche above the altar. This statue prompted a grand celebration in 1718 a testament to the Carthusians devotion. A Milanese writer even documented this event.
Two frescoes adorn the pilasters separating the nave from the presbytery. They depict Saint Bernard and Saint Fermo. The sanctuary also holds a Via Crucis painted in 1765 by the Milanese artist Maria Antonia Valli nee Giussani. The ceiling frescoes are the youthful work of the Treviglio painter Carminati completed in 1947-1948.
The Romanesque bell tower dominates the skyline. Visible from afar it has become a symbol of Mesero. The Santuario della Madonna Addolorata e di San Bernardo always belonged to the local community not the parish. The municipal administration is its current owner. In 1998 the facade and exterior were restored thanks to the public administration. The interior however requires urgent attention to restore its artistic treasures to their former glory. As we stand here you can sense the devotion that has sustained this sanctuary for centuries. The prayers whispers and celebrations of generations echo within these walls.
