Standing here, can you feel the devotion that permeates the very stones of the Santuario Beata Vergine della Bozzola? This sanctuary isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith and a symbol of hope for the town of Garlasco.
The Santuario Beata Vergine della Bozzola’s story begins in 1465. A young girl named Maria experienced a miracle here. Maria was thirteen and unable to speak or hear. One day, seeking shelter from a storm, she found herself before a fresco of the Virgin Mary. Suddenly, the Madonna appeared to her. The Virgin told Maria to tell the people of Garlasco that she wanted a sanctuary built there. She promised many graces would be bestowed upon those who sought her aid.
In that instant, Maria could hear and speak. She returned to Garlasco and delivered the Madonna’s message. The villagers believed her. From that moment on, she was known as Maria Benedetta. The name “Bozzola” comes from the local dialect word “buslà”. This refers to the hawthorn bushes that once dotted the landscape.
The Santuario Beata Vergine della Bozzola was erected in the early 16th century. This was on the site of a votive chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The sanctuary has been expanded and renovated over the centuries. In 1662, the bell tower was built. The octagonal dome was started in 1720. The nave was extended and the right and left transepts were opened in 1860.
The facade we see now was constructed in 1897. It was designed by the engineer Nava from Milan. Statues of Faith and Hope adorn the facade. These were created by the Rossi Speluzzi company of Milan.
Inside the Santuario Beata Vergine della Bozzola, there are noteworthy wooden statues. They date back to the 18th century. These depict the Lamentation over the Dead Christ in an inner chapel. In 1927, the sanctuary was granted the title of minor basilica.
In 1931, the image of the Madonna was crowned with a gold crown. This was a special concession from the Vatican Chapter. A fountain was added in the piazza in 1954.
A complete restoration of the Santuario Beata Vergine della Bozzola was undertaken in 1990. This included the roofs, frescoes, and the presbytery. The statue of Maria Benedetta was blessed in 1991. It stands behind the main altar as a symbol of faith.
Today, the Santuario Beata Vergine della Bozzola continues to be a place of pilgrimage. People come to seek solace. They also come to ask for blessings. It stands as a reminder of the miracle that occurred here centuries ago. The sanctuary is not only a symbol of religious devotion. It is also a symbol of architectural beauty and artistic expression. It embodies the rich history of Garlasco. Take a moment to appreciate the serenity and the stories held within these walls.
