Santon Parish War Memorial

What secrets does a simple sandstone memorial hold? The Santon Parish War Memorial, bathed in the Isle of Man’s soft light, whispers stories of courage and sacrifice. It stands as a solemn reminder of the two World Wars. It honors the men of this parish who gave their lives in the name of freedom. The Santon Parish War Memorial originally resided at a busy intersection. It stood at the corner of Ballavale and the New Castletown Road. However, the increasing traffic made holding Remembrance Day services there nearly impossible. The Isle of Man Highway Board also had plans for the road that would necessitate the memorial’s relocation. After much discussion, the parish decided to move the Santon Parish War Memorial. Its new home, next to the new Parish Churchyard, offers a peaceful setting. The memorial now overlooks the sea and the rolling hills, a serene backdrop for reflection. The re-dedication ceremony took place on October 17, 1975. Bishop Vernon S. Nicholls led the service, with Reverend Harold Hughes participating. A choir of sixteen led the congregation from St. Sanctain’s Church to the memorial’s new location. School headmasters allowed the children in the choir to witness this important moment in the parish’s history. The inscription on the Santon Parish War Memorial reads: “In / grateful & loving / memory of / the men / of this parish / who lost their lives / in the Great War / 1914-1918 / this memorial / is erected by their / fellow parishioners. In armour clad, with flag / unfurled, / the heights of death they trod / translated from the warfare / of the world / into the peace of God. It is noting to you, all ye / that pass by.” A later addition remembers those lost in the Second World War, 1939-1945. For many years, the names of the fallen were recorded only on a scroll inside St. Sanctain’s Church. In 2004, the names were finally inscribed on the Santon Parish War Memorial itself, ensuring their sacrifice would never be forgotten.
