When the Vandals, led by King Genseric, invaded Sicily in 454 AD, Olivia’s faith was put to the ultimate test. At only thirteen, she comforted imprisoned Christians, encouraging them to remain steadfast in their beliefs. The Vandals, recognizing her unwavering spirit, sent her to Tunis, hoping to break her resolve. In Tunis, Olivia’s devotion remained unshakeable. She performed miracles, converting many to Christianity. The governor, threatened by her influence, banished her to the wilderness, expecting wild animals to devour her. Yet, they remained docile at her side. Hunters, captivated by her beauty, attempted to harm her, but were instead converted by her words. Olivia’s fame grew, her healing touch reaching countless people. The governor, enraged, imprisoned and tortured her, even immersing her in boiling oil. Yet, she emerged unscathed, her faith unbroken. Finally, on June 10, 463 AD, Olivia was beheaded. Legend says her soul ascended to heaven in the form of a dove. Sant’Oliva stands as a symbol of Olivia’s unwavering devotion. Even in Tunis, a mosque bears her name, a testament to the respect she garnered across religious divides. It’s said that speaking ill of Saint Olivia brings misfortune, a belief held by both Christians and Muslims.
