Eleven thousand blue and white tiles. That’s what first catches your eye at Santo Ildefonso. These aren’t just any tiles. They tell a story. A story of Saint Ildefonso himself.
The Igreja de Santo Ildefonso isn’t just a pretty face. It stands as a testament to Porto’s rich history. It’s a church with a past. A chapel stood here centuries before. Santo Alifon it was called. That original chapel is mentioned in a 1296 text by Bishop Vicente Mendes. We know little about it except that it crumbled.
In 1709 they tore down the old chapel. A new church was born. Thirty years later in 1739. Santo Ildefonso opened its doors. The Italian artist Nicolau Nasoni designed its stunning retable. His talent touched many places in Porto. The main body of Santo Ildefonso is an elongated octagon. The granite exterior is remarkably plain. Except for those magnificent azulejo tiles.
Jorge Colaço added those stunning tiles in 1932. They depict scenes from Saint Ildefonso’s life. They tell stories from the Gospels. Imagine the work. Eleven thousand individual tiles. Each one painstakingly placed.
The church suffered damage. A storm in 1819. Artillery fire in 1833 during the Siege of Porto. Yet it stands strong. It has been restored and repaired. New stained-glass windows arrived in 1967. They were the work of artist Isolino Vaz. During renovations in 1996. Nineteen graves were discovered under the narthex. These were in the original chapel’s churchyard.
Look closely. Notice the two bell towers. They are topped with stone spheres and crosses. Small Portuguese flags flutter atop. A monolithic obelisk stands nearby. It was initially aligned with the Clerigos Church. It was moved in 1924. This was when steps leading to Rua de 31 de Janeiro were altered to make room for shops.
