“They call it the Santo Niño Bridge” I began “but its official name is the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway or CCLEX for short.” The bridge stretches before us a magnificent cable-stayed structure. It connects mainland Cebu to Cordova on Mactan Island. This impressive feat of engineering is more than just a bridge. It is a symbol of progress a testament to the enduring spirit of Cebuanos.

The Santo Niño Bridge wasn’t always just a concrete and steel vision. It began as a dream. Cordova’s Mayor Adelino Sitoy envisioned a bridge to connect his municipality with mainland Cebu. This wasn’t just about convenience. It was about economic growth and stronger community ties. His vision however took years to materialize. After many studies and proposals the project finally secured a public-private partnership. Construction started in 2017. It would be five years before the Santo Niño Bridge opened.

The bridge’s construction wasn’t without its challenges. The project required intricate engineering and careful planning. The Mactan Channel is known for its unpredictable currents and weather patterns. The builders however overcame these obstacles. They finished the main bridge deck in 2021. They chose to celebrate the Quincentennial Commemorations of Christianity in the Philippines. Eight massive crosses were installed on the bridge pylons. They were illuminated in April 2021 a stunning spectacle.

Then came the grand opening in April 2022. The Santo Niño Bridge became the longest and tallest bridge in the Philippines. It surpassed even the San Juanico Bridge a feat of engineering celebrated across the nation. The bridge isn’t just for cars. Pedestrians and cyclists can use it too. It’s an alternate route to Mactan-Cebu International Airport. It significantly reduced travel time between Cebu City and Cordova.

But the story of the Santo Niño Bridge isn’t finished. There are plans to expand it further. A new ramp is being built on the Cebu City side. Future plans include an extension to Lapu-Lapu City possibly connecting to the airport. Perhaps one day it will even connect to the proposed Cebu-Bohol Bridge. The Santo Niño Bridge’s legacy is one of progress connection and a testament to the enduring ambition of a people. It is a bridge not only between islands but between past present and future. The Santo Niño Bridge is truly a wonder to behold.
