In 1657 a small chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony was built. This humble beginning marked the start of the Santo Antonio dos Congregados story. The Santo Antonio wasn’t always the building we see today. Its construction spanned years. It was completed in 1680. Prince Pedro then granted it royal protection. An annual grant ensured its upkeep. This wasn’t enough for the growing congregation though. In 1694 a decision was made to build a larger church. Construction lasted until 1703. The Santo Antonio played an unexpected role during the siege of Porto between 1832 and 1835. It served as a hospital. Military equipment was also stored within its walls. The Santo Antonio’s facade is surprisingly understated. Compared to other Porto churches it is sober. However you can still see hints of Baroque style. Intricate stonework frames the main windows. This is particularly noticeable on the roof section. The Santo Antonio is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a living testament to Porto’s rich history. The story of Saint Anthony himself is equally compelling. Born in Lisbon in the late 12th century he was baptized Fernando Martins de Bulhoes. He became a priest a Franciscan friar. He was renowned for his Bible knowledge and powerful preaching. He is the patron saint of finding lost things and people. His path to sainthood is full of twists and turns. Initially a Canon Regular at the Augustinian Abbey of Saint Vincent he found the visits from his wealthy family distracting. He requested a transfer to the monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra. There he devoted himself to his studies of Latin Canon law philosophy and theology. He later became the abbey’s Guestmaster. While in Coimbra Franciscan friars arrived. Fernando was drawn to their simple lifestyle. Inspired by the martyrdom of five Franciscans in Morocco he joined their order. He took the name Anthony. He embarked on a missionary journey to Morocco. Illness forced him to return to Portugal. A storm changed his course. He landed in Sicily and eventually made his way to Tuscany. He was assigned to a convent and later to a hermitage. There he devoted himself to prayer and study. In 1222 a sermon delivered by Fernando impressed everyone present. His abilities were recognised. He became a renowned preacher and teacher. He gained the attention of Francis of Assisi and Pope Gregory IX. He sadly died young at only 35. His rapid canonization reflects his preaching ability and dedication to the church. Look closely at the Santo Antonio’s blue and white tiles. Their intricate designs depict scenes from the life of Saint Anthony and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The beauty of the Santo Antonio’s interior is a testament to the skilled artisans Jorge Colaço and João Baptista Ribeiro. These beautiful tiles are a stunning reminder of the dedication that went into creating this beautiful building. The Santo Antonio dos Congregados stands today as a place of worship. It’s also a historical landmark a beautiful piece of Porto’s heritage. So take a moment soak in its history and appreciate its quiet beauty.
