The cornerstone of the Santissimo Sepolcro church was laid in 1740. Prince Nicolò Branciforti initiated its construction. Legend says he tossed coins where the stone columns now stand. The Santissimo Sepolcro wasn’t always as grand as it is today. It began as a single-nave church. Later expansions around 1866 added two side aisles. Further embellishments and modifications followed. These included the alteration of the side aisle roofs around 1884. The original barrel-vaulted ceilings were replaced with cupolas. This gave the Santissimo Sepolcro its unique architectural style.
The Santissimo Sepolcro’s main altar is a notable feature. Donated in 1877 it originates from the demolished Church of San Giacomo in Palermo. An inscription on the altar reveals a fascinating detail. Emperor Charles VI of Austria and King of Sicily started its construction in 1733. His granddaughter Maria Carolina Queen of Sicily completed it in 1799. The Santissimo Sepolcro’s walls are adorned with stunning artwork. Two large paintings depict scenes from the life of Christ. Eustachio Catalano created these masterpieces. The Santissimo Sepolcro also houses smaller paintings. These portray the apostles John and Mary Magdalene at the crucifixion. A marble statue of St John Nepomucene another notable piece. It too hails from the Church of San Giacomo.
The Santissimo Sepolcro boasts more treasures. The tabernacle in the left nave once formed part of the main altar. Its interior was gilded around 1940. The impressive walnut presidential seat is attributed to Ludovico Li Vigni a Palermo craftsman. The church’s baptismal font another highlight. Giuseppe Pellitteri crafted this beautiful white marble font. Filippo Buttitta a Bagheria carpenter created its solid walnut lid. A large painting of Jesus’ baptism adorns the right nave. It is the work of the painter De Simone. The Santissimo Sepolcro also features a statue of St Francis of Paola. A wooden Stations of the Cross adds to its religious significance. Sculptor Francesco Martiner from Ortisei created this moving depiction of Christ’s journey.
The Santissimo Sepolcro’s neo-Gothic facade is an architectural marvel. Engineer Ernesto Armò designed it in 1914. Construction though was delayed by World War I completing ten years later. Billiemi marble adorns this stunning facade. The Santissimo Sepolcro’s central nave boasts frescoes depicting the Passion of Christ. A wooden statue of the Sorrowful Mother stands on the central altar. Rosario Quattrocchi crafted this poignant sculpture at the beginning of the 19th century. The Santissimo Sepolcro stands as a testament to Palermo’s rich artistic and religious heritage. A place where art history and faith intertwine to create a truly unforgettable experience.
