Nestled in the Milanese suburb of Nosedo, the Church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo whispers tales of centuries past. This unassuming church, once part of a separate village independent from Milan, stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. The very ground beneath Santi Giacomo e Filippo holds secrets. Ceramics unearthed beneath the church floor hint at Roman inhabitation as early as the first century AD. The name Nosedo itself echoes this ancient past, believed to originate from the Latin word “Nocetum.” The church we see today, built in the mid-thirteenth century, rests partly on the foundations of its predecessor. Imagine the echoes of prayers rising through the centuries, from Roman times to the present day. A funerary inscription from 536 AD, now embedded in the church wall, suggests the continuous presence of a Christian community and a church on this site since Roman times. The Santi Giacomo e Filippo evolved over time. Originally a single, straightforward room, the fourteenth century saw the addition of a portico. This portico was later enclosed in the sixteenth century, becoming part of the nave and giving the church its current elongated form. The church faced years of neglect and decay, but thankfully, extensive restorations between 1985 and 2015 saved it from ruin. The simple rectangular structure of Santi Giacomo e Filippo, adorned with a small sacristy and a gabled roof, belies the treasures within. The exterior, devoid of ornamentation, features three “holes” in the rear plaster, revealing glimpses of the wall’s construction. Atop the rear façade sits a belfry, its presence a silent reminder of the passage of time. Inside, vibrant fourteenth-century frescoes adorn the upper walls, transporting you back in time. Above the altar, a blessing Christ offers solace. To his right, an angel with an eagle’s head symbolizes John the Evangelist. A Baroque altar, a survivor of the church’s many transformations, stands proudly. Beside it, a white marble bas-relief depicts St. John. Beneath the church floor lies a hidden world. A window inserted during restoration offers a glimpse into the past, revealing the graves of at least 76 individuals buried here between the Middle Ages and the sixteenth century. Their remains, adorned with jewelry and decorations, speak of a medium-high social class and offer valuable insights into the lives, customs, and health of the community that once thrived around Santi Giacomo e Filippo.
