The story begins over a century ago in 1911. Santee was a land of dairy farms and open spaces back then. A small group of earnest Christians gathered at the old Santee Elementary School. They wanted to establish a house of worship. Thus, the Santee Methodist Episcopal Church was born. It later became known as Santee Community Church.
The first service took place on June 4, 1911. Reverend Frank Edwards led the service in the Santee schoolhouse. Soon after, thirty-three people joined and started building the new church. The total cost was $4,100. Thanks to much volunteer work, the church was dedicated in 1912.
The Santee United Methodist Church building could seat about a hundred people. Most were local farmers and ranchers. Edgar E. Campbell, a San Diego hotel developer, was also a member.
An interesting anecdote involves a man named Mr. Kramer. Otis Hurley sought a donation from him. Initially, Kramer refused. But Hurley returned home with a check for $200. This was a significant amount of money at the time.
Much has changed since then. The original Santee United Methodist Church building was condemned in 1969.
In 1949, a fellowship hall and classrooms were added. After the original building was condemned, services were held in the hall for ten years. A new sanctuary opened in 1979 after a decade of fundraising. More space was added in 1996. This brought the Santee United Methodist Church campus to its current form.
Today, Santee United Methodist Church is active in the community. The Santee Food Bank operates from the church office. For over 34 years, the church has held a sunrise service. This service is in conjunction with the Santee and other organizations. A free pancake breakfast is held monthly. This is for anyone who wants to come and enjoy fellowship.
The church founded a preschool in 1977. This provided affordable childcare to working families. Recovery groups meet there daily. The church also hosts an annual toy drive. Showers and sanitation supplies are available for the homeless.
The Santee United Methodist Church music program is amazing. It features three vocal groups: a choir, a praise team, and Cross Section. Cross Section is a country group.
Rev. Jaime Pangman is the current pastor. Carol Olewine is the Office Manager. Dr. Kyle Rowan serves as the Music Director. Peter Burrell is the Finance Secretary. Jan Ault has been the church pianist since 1991.
