Legend says that the devil himself once battled Saint Ambrose right here. This is the Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio. It is one of Milan’s oldest churches. Today, we will uncover its stories.

The Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio stands as a testament to Milan’s rich past. Saint Ambrose founded the original church in the fourth century. He is Milan’s revered patron saint. The church you see now dates mainly from the twelfth century. Bombing during the Second World War caused damage. Restoration work followed.

Saint Ambrose’s life is fascinating. Born in Germany around 339 AD, he studied rhetoric in Rome. He moved to Milan in 370. Here, he aimed to resolve conflicts as people tried to elect a new bishop. Ambrose delivered a speech that moved everyone. They chose him as the bishop’s successor.

Initially, Ambrose refused. He wasn’t baptized yet. He also lacked theological knowledge. But under pressure, he accepted. His appointment became official on December 7th 374. This day is now celebrated as the feast of Sant’Ambrogio.

As bishop, Ambrose showed concern for the poor. He lived an austere life. He changed the Roman rite creating the Ambrosian rite. He also built several basilicas. These included San Nazaro and San Simpliciano. Sant’Ambrogio is where he was buried in 397.

The Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio has a famous legend. It involves the Devil’s Column. This column stands to the left of the basilica. Two holes mark it. The story says that Satan tempted Saint Ambrose. Satan wanted him to renounce his position. Saint Ambrose kicked him. The kick knocked Satan against the column. His horns made the two holes. The devil remained stuck until the next day. Then, he disappeared into the column. One hole became an opening to hell.

Another legend tells of Ambrose as a baby. A swarm of bees flew in and out of his mouth. They left honey without harming him. This made him the patron saint of beekeepers.

The Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio also has a beautiful open courtyard. It features a colonnade. Inside, the basilica has simple decorations. The mosaic in the chapel draws attention. Its gold, red, white, and blue colors create a strong contrast. Bombing damaged the mosaic but it was fully restored.

Milanese people celebrate Sant’Ambrogio with a day off. Religious people attend Mass in the basilica. Others visit the Oh Bej. Oh Bej fair. They enjoy roasted chestnuts and mulled wine. Stalls sell nativity scenes and Christmas decorations. Many Italians put up their Christmas trees on December 7th.

Before you leave, notice the Colonna del Diavolo. Remember the legend. A devil was kicked. Now you know about Saint Ambrose. You also know about his basilica.
