Once upon a time, there was a vibrant community. This community sought a beacon of faith and service. That beacon is now Santa Teresita Roman Catholic Church.
Santa Teresita Roman Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith. It also represents community spirit in East Los Angeles. Established in 1923, this parish has a rich history. It has touched countless lives.
Initially, Santa Teresita Roman Catholic Church began as a confraternity center in 1922. Maude Rice Ibbetson’s hard work led to the purchase of land. This land would house the church, a hall, and a rectory. By 1926, the church was built. Priests from St. Vibiana Cathedral attended it. Father Augustine O’Dea from Ireland was the first pastor.
In 1942, Father Antonio Boquet from Spain remodeled the church. He also added a hall. The Santa Teresita School opened in 1950. The Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose staffed it. Sister Marguerite Mendoza was the founding principal.
The Piarist Fathers arrived in 1973. They dedicated themselves to serving the poor. Since then, they have played vital roles at Santa Teresita. They have been pastors, administrators, and team members. Father Raymond Farre was the first Piarist pastor.
Santa Teresita Catholic Church is more than just a building. It actively lives the Good News of Jesus. The parish focuses on faith growth. It serves immigrants and the less fortunate. Special attention is given to children’s education.
Currently, Father Federico Castillo Gonzalez is the pastor. He was born in Mexico City in 1977. He became pastor of Santa Teresita Parish in 2023.
Santa Teresita Roman Catholic Church offers several masses. Masses are held in both English and Spanish. Weekday masses are at 8:00 a.m. in Spanish. On Saturdays, there is a Spanish mass at 8:00 a.m. Sunday masses are at 8:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. in Spanish. There is also a 10:00 a.m. mass in English.
The Dominican Sisters’ charism still guides Santa Teresita School. The school preaches truth and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They teach the young, the poor, and the vulnerable. The Piarist Fathers support the school. They also support the sacramental life of students.
Santa Teresita stands as a beacon. It shines brightly in Boyle Heights. The church is a testament to faith, community, and service. It embodies the spirit of “the Little Flower.” The church continues to serve East L.A. with devotion and love.
