From its humble beginnings as a small reading room nestled beside a drugstore the Santa Monica Main Public Library stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring love of learning.

This isn’t just any library. It’s a cornerstone of Santa Monica’s history. Its journey began in 1884. A simple reading room was the seed that blossomed into the vibrant institution we see today. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union took over in 1888. They nurtured it. The collection expanded. Then in 1890 the library officially became a gift to the city of Santa Monica. Elfie Mosse was appointed the first City Librarian.

The library moved many times. Each move reflected Santa Monica’s growth. From small rooms in a bank building to a new City Hall it finally found a home in a Carnegie-funded building. This was in 1904. Andrew Carnegie himself provided the funds for its construction. Local citizens contributed too. They raised funds for the land.

The library continued to grow and evolve. A major renovation in the 1920s transformed the building into a beautiful Spanish-style structure. Inside Stanton Macdonald-Wright’s stunning mural graced the walls. The Public Works Administration commissioned this masterpiece. It took eighteen months to paint. The vibrant colors are truly captivating. Children’s book illustrator Eulalie Wilson also created murals. These adorned the children’s section for decades. These beautiful works of art brought joy to generations of young readers.

The library has continued to meet the evolving needs of the community. A new main library was built in 1965. This modern building was designed by architects Matthew Robert Leizer and Thomas J. Russell. Unfortunately the Macdonald-Wright murals were not included in this new building. Thankfully the Smithsonian Institution saved them. They are now back in the library on loan.

The current Santa Monica Main Public Library opened in 2006. This LEED-certified building features state-of-the-art facilities and ample space for visitors. This amazing facility includes the Martin Luther King Jr Auditorium. This shows the library’s commitment to its community. It offers a wide range of programs and services. Everything from book clubs to computer classes is available.

The Santa Monica Main Public Library is more than just a repository of books. It’s a living hub. A heart of its community. It offers a rich history of service and dedication to the pursuit of knowledge. As you stand here today you’re standing before a testament to the power of community. A monument to learning. It’s a library that has shaped Santa Monica for over a century. A place that will continue to enrich lives for generations to come.
