Did you ever hear of a king’s dream coming true? One night in 1171, King William II, nicknamed “the Good”, dreamt of the Virgin Mary. She revealed a hidden treasure to him. This treasure, hidden by his father William I, was meant to fund a magnificent temple in her honor. Under a carob tree, William II found the treasure and began constructing the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Reale in Monreale. Santa Maria la Reale isn’t just any cathedral. It’s a testament to a king’s devotion and a stunning example of Norman architecture blended with Arab artistry. The construction began in 1174. In 1182, Pope Lucius III declared it a metropolitan cathedral. The archbishops of Santa Maria la Reale enjoyed great power and privilege. They controlled vast lands and served as the highest judicial authority. The cathedral became the heart of Monreale, a symbol of grandeur and artistry. The bronze doors, adorned with biblical scenes, invite you into a world of shimmering gold. Inside, 7,584 square meters of Byzantine mosaics tell the story of Christianity. The most captivating image is Christ Pantocrator in the apse. His gaze seems to follow you, a powerful presence that resonates throughout Santa Maria la Reale. Within these walls also lie the tombs of kings. William I and William II rest here, their legacies intertwined with the cathedral’s history. A chapel built in 1270 once held the remains of King Louis IX of France. Now, it houses an urn containing his heart and entrails, a poignant reminder of his crusade. Over the centuries, Santa Maria la Reale has faced its share of challenges. Lightning strikes and fires have tested its resilience. But each time, it has been restored, its beauty undiminished. Even today, the cathedral continues to evolve. The new multimedia museum, “The Workshop of William,” brings the history of Santa Maria la Reale and the Archdiocese of Monreale to life in a modern, interactive way.
