This treasure, hidden by his father William I, was meant to fund a magnificent temple in her honor. Under a carob tree, William II found the treasure and began constructing the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Reale in Monreale. Santa Maria la Reale isn’t just any cathedral. It’s a testament to a king’s devotion and a stunning example of Norman architecture blended with Arab artistry. The construction began in 1174. In 1182, Pope Lucius III declared it a metropolitan cathedral. The archbishops of Santa Maria la Reale enjoyed great power and privilege. They controlled vast lands and served as the highest judicial authority. The cathedral became the heart of Monreale, a symbol of grandeur and artistry. The bronze doors, adorned with biblical scenes, invite you into a world of shimmering gold. Inside, 7,584 square meters of Byzantine mosaics tell the story of Christianity.
