Imagine stepping into a time capsule where art, faith, and history converge within the walls of Santa Maria delle Grazie. This is no ordinary church. It is a sanctuary holding secrets whispered across centuries.

Santa Maria delle Grazie stands as a testament to Milan’s rich cultural heritage. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its story begins in 1459 when Count Gaspare Vimercati donated land to the Dominican friars. They wanted to build a church.

Initially, Guiniforte Solari designed Santa Maria delle Grazie in the late Gothic style. This phase concluded around 1490. Then, Duke Ludovico Sforza decided to transform the church into his family’s burial site. He called upon Donato Bramante to remodel it. Bramante infused a Renaissance spirit. He rebuilt the apse and crowned it with a magnificent dome.

Tragedy struck when Ludovico’s wife, Beatrice d’Este, died in 1497. She was buried here. Later, Ludovico faced his own downfall and was ousted in 1500. His sepulchral monument was moved.

Look closely at the church’s exterior. You will see a blend of styles. Solari’s sober brick facade meets Bramante’s Renaissance-style entrance. The lunette in the portico once showcased Leonardo da Vinci’s artistry. It depicted Mary with Ludovico and his wife. Bramante’s dome dominates the scene decorated with medallions and coats-of-arms.

Inside Santa Maria delle Grazie, the central nave exemplifies late Gothic architecture. Elegant pointed arches are embellished with delicate frescoes. The Renaissance chancel presents a stark contrast. Chapels line the aisles adorned with beautiful frescoes.

Take note of the wooden choir stalls in the apse. To the left lies the Chiostrino delle Rane. It is a small cloister named after bronze frog sculptures around its fountain. From here, you gain a stunning view of the church’s dome.

Yet, the true allure of Santa Maria delle Grazie lies adjacent to the church. Here stands the refectory. It is famed for Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” Da Vinci painted this masterpiece between 1495 and 1498 for Ludovico il Moro. He captured the moment when Jesus reveals his betrayal. The fresco displays realistic facial expressions and subtle light.

Da Vinci employed an experimental technique called Tempera Forte. This allowed for greater detail. Sadly, it also led to rapid deterioration. Despite numerous restorations, the fresco almost miraculously survived the 1943 bombings. This was thanks to protective sandbags.

Today, Santa Maria delle Grazie stands as a symbol of resilience and artistic brilliance. It beckons us to reflect on history. It invites us to admire the fusion of Gothic and Renaissance styles. It encourages us to marvel at Leonardo da Vinci’s timeless masterpiece.
