The weathered stone whispers secrets. This is Santa Maria della Consolazione. Right here in Largo Cairoli it stands a testament to Milan’s rich history.

Santa Maria della Consolazione wasn’t always this way. Originally an oratory it was built in 1471 by Galeazzo Maria Sforza. He dedicated it to the Mother of Consolation. It was a place of solace a refuge amidst the bustling castle grounds.

The agostinian friars took over in 1492. They added a convent. Sadly the convent is long gone. It fell victim to the expansion of the Sforza Castle. Only the church remained. It endured renovations and changes.

Through the centuries Santa Maria della Consolazione transformed. The neoclassical facade you see today is the work of Giovan Battista Chiappa. He completed it in 1836. Three statues adorn the facade. They depict the Virgin Mary and two angels.

Step inside. Notice the single nave and eight chapels. The artistry of the 17th century shines through. Camillo Procaccini’s paintings grace the coffered wooden ceiling. They depict the Apostles.

A highlight is the magnificent altarpiece. It features the Mother of Consolation. It arrived in 1502. Don’t miss Enea Salmeggia’s “Martyrdom of Saint Andrew”. This treasure is in the third chapel on the right. It dates to 1604.

Santa Maria della Consolazione is more than just a historical site. It is a vibrant hub for the Filipino community. They donated a statue of the Santo Niño de Cebú. This revered statue sits in the first chapel on the left. It shares space with a dedication to Blessed Contardo Ferrini.

Since 2015 the church holds a traditional Ambrosian Mass. It uses the Latin Missal of 1954. This special service happens every Sunday at 8:15 am and 9:45 am.
