Nestled on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the Santa Cruz Church whispers tales of resilience and faith. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to a unique chapter in Bangkok’s history, a blend of Thai generosity and Portuguese devotion. Santa Cruz Church, meaning “Holy Cross” in Portuguese, stands as a symbol of a community’s enduring spirit. It was King Taksin, after the fall of Ayutthaya to the Burmese in 1767, who granted land to Portuguese settlers. These settlers had proven their loyalty by fighting alongside him. Their reward? A place to rebuild their lives and their faith in the new capital of Thonburi. The first Santa Cruz Church, built of wood in 1770, succumbed to flames in 1833. Undeterred, the community, now joined by Chinese residents, rebuilt it. This “Kudi Jeen” or Chinese church as it became known, gave its name to the surrounding area. The present Santa Cruz Church, a stunning example of Italianate style, rose in 1916. It replaced the previous structure. This newer building remains a beacon of hope, its reddish dome a striking landmark against the river’s backdrop. Step inside, and you’ll find a vibrant interior. Colorful stained glass windows depict scenes from the Bible. A dome, painted a serene sky-blue, features Jesus on the cross, positioned above the altar. The ceiling shimmers with blue and gold decorations. Outside, statues of Jesus and Mary guard the entrance. Statues of monks in brown robes and images of the crucifixion and the Virgin Mary dot the grounds. Santa Cruz Church served as the main Catholic church in Thailand until Assumption Cathedral’s completion in 1821. Today, Santa Cruz Church, or Wat Kudi Jeen, stands as a reminder of a vibrant past, a place where cultures intertwined and faith took root. It embodies the strength of a community. It exemplifies the legacy of King Taksin’s generosity. It serves as a quiet sanctuary on the bustling riverbank, welcoming all who seek its solace.
