A whispered prayer echoes through time. This is Santa Maria Incoronata a church in Milan. Its history is woven into the very stones beneath our feet.

Completed in 1460 this magnificent building boasts a fascinating past. Originally it stood as St Maria di Gargnano a simpler structure. By 1400 Augustinian friars had established a convent nearby. They renovated the church in the elegant Late Gothic style.

The church’s name changed with the rise of Francesco Sforza as Duke of Milan in 1451. It became Santa Maria Incoronata meaning St Mary Crowned. This name celebrates the Duke’s ascension and the church’s new prominence. Bianca Maria Visconti the Duke’s wife commissioned a new church identical to the old one. This was linked to the original building creating a larger more impressive edifice.

Inside the church awaits a treasure trove of art. A painting by Bergognone depicting Christ under the grill. There is also the tomb of Giovanni Bossi a magnificent work attributed to Bambaia. A Baroque fresco cycle detailing the life of St Nicholas of Tolentino graces the walls. The Humanist Library from the 15th century is awe-inspiring. Its three naves are divided by elegant granite columns. Frescoes adorn the walls. These frescoes were commissioned by the Augustinians after acquiring the building. Only one cloister remains of the original gardens and courtyards a testament to the passage of time.

The church has undergone several modifications throughout the centuries. Alterations happened in 1654 and 1827. But it was beautifully restored to its medieval appearance in the early 19th century.

Santa Maria Incoronata stands not just as a church. It is a living monument a time capsule filled with art history and faith. Its stones whisper tales of dukes and friars of art and devotion. A place where the past present and future intertwine. Step inside and feel the weight of history. Allow yourself to be captivated by this breathtaking Milanese treasure.
