Has anyone ever wondered how Santa Claus Village became the official home of Santa? Santa Claus Village, nestled near Rovaniemi, Finland, isn’t just a winter wonderland. It’s steeped in history, with its roots tracing back to a visit by Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1950s. Mrs. Roosevelt’s visit led to the construction of the Roosevelt Lodge on the Arctic Circle. This marked the beginning of the area’s transformation into a destination celebrating Christmas. The first “home” for Santa Claus was actually Korvatunturi. It was intended to be a Finnish equivalent of Disneyland. However, in 1985, Rovaniemi officially claimed the title of Santa Claus’s hometown. This paved the way for the creation of Santa Claus Village, a place where the magic of Christmas could come alive. Santa Claus Village is located approximately 8 kilometers from Rovaniemi and a mere 2 kilometers from Rovaniemi Airport. Visitors to Santa Claus Village can experience the magic of crossing the Arctic Circle. A white line marks the circle’s position as it was in 1865. This makes for a popular photo opportunity. Fun fact: the Arctic Circle’s actual location is about 700 meters further north, near Rovaniemi Airport. At Santa Claus Village you can visit Santa in his office. You can even send letters from Santa Claus’s Main Post Office, complete with a special Arctic Circle postmark. For those interested in Arctic history, Santa’s House of Snowmobiles offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of this important mode of transportation. Santa Claus Village is a place where dreams come true, where the spirit of Christmas lives on all year round. It’s a testament to the power of imagination and the enduring belief in the magic of Santa Claus.
