What if I told you that this seemingly simple church is more than just a place of worship? Sankta Maria kyrka is a hub of community support and artistic expression. This is Sankta Maria kyrka in Malmö. It is a place where people find solace and practical help.

Sankta Maria kyrka stands on Södervärnsgatan. It is near Möllevången. This church isn’t just a building. It is a diaconal center in Malmö. Within its walls, you will find Café Maria and Maria klädförråd. Maria klädförråd is a clothing donation center.

Sankta Maria kyrka belongs to S:t Johannes parish. Other churches in this parish include S:t Johannes kyrka, S:t Matteus kyrka, and S:t Pauli kyrka. But Sankta Maria kyrka has a unique character all its own.

The church building dates back to 1928. It originally served as Västra Skrävlinge parish hall. August Ewe and Carl Melin designed it. In 1949, it became a church for the newly formed Möllevångens parish. At that time, it was known as Möllevångens kyrka.

In 1963, the church was rebuilt. Thorsten Roos and Bror Thornberg were the architects. It was then that it received its current name, Sankta Maria kyrka. The bell tower was also added during this renovation. The first Sunday of Advent in 1963 marked its re-inauguration.

The exterior is made of red brick. The roof is covered with clay tiles. Sankta Maria kyrka is next to Södervärns water tower. The whole church was repainted inside in 1990.

Inside, the church can hold about 450 people. It is a basilica style building. It features a nave and two aisles. A 25-meter high bell tower stands outside the church. It houses three bells.

A monumental mosaic dominates the interior. Bo Beskow created it. It shows Jesus calming the storm. Seven square windows line one long wall. They symbolize the seven days of creation.

The altar and pulpit are made of Öland stone. The baptismal font comes from Orrefors glassworks. Sven Palmqvist signed it. In the entrance hall, a window by Bo Beskow depicts Mary. She is Jesus’ mother. The church is named after her.

The church offers many community services. A clothing donation center operates here. It provides clothes and shoes to children and adults in need. You can book an appointment during opening hours. Remember to bring your ID.

A choir welcomes everyone. No prior experience is needed. They meet every Thursday at lunchtime. This is in the parish hall of Sankta Maria kyrka.

You can find showers in the basement. They are free of charge. They are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings.

Legal advice is available every Tuesday morning. Law students from Lund University provide it. The entrance is through the church.

Sankta Maria kyrka also hosts support groups for children. These children have lost a parent or sibling. They can talk about their thoughts and feelings. They meet others facing the same situation.

The organ was built in 1965. A. Mårtenssons orgelfabrik in Lund built it. It has a complex design.

Sankta Maria kyrka is not just a beautiful building. It is a place of help, art, and community. It is a testament to the church’s role in people’s lives. As you leave, consider the many ways Sankta Maria kyrka serves Malmö.
