“Ever heard the tale of a bishop striking a deal with the Devil himself?” I ask, gesturing toward Sankt Wolfgang before us. It is a story etched in the very stones of this place. Sankt Wolfgang stands as a testament to faith. It is a place where the divine and the diabolical met.

Bamberg is sometimes called “The Rome of Germany”. This Franconian Rome extends over seven hills each crowned by a church.

Let’s step back in time to the life of St. Wolfgang. Born around 934 in Swabia, Germany, he was a man of great intellect and charisma. St. Wolfgang dedicated his life to the Church. He became a bishop known for spreading the Gospel. He also cared for the poor.

But it’s the legend of Sankt Wolfgang that truly captures the imagination. Imagine Wolfgang as a hermit near the Wolfgangsee lake. He had a vision to build a church. To find the perfect spot, he climbed Schafberg Mountain. From the summit, he cast his ax into the valley below. He vowed to build where it landed.

The ax flew and landed between the mountain and the lake. There, Wolfgang encountered a wolf and then a hunter. Both refused to help him build his church. Finally, he met Master Urian. That’s another name for the Devil.

Urian agreed to build the church. But there was a catch. The first soul to enter would belong to him. Wolfgang, in his wisdom, agreed. The Devil worked with unnatural speed. Soon, a unique church stood complete. Its style was Romanesque. It had a crooked passage and a squat steeple.

But Wolfgang had a plan to outsmart the Devil. As the church was ready, he released a wolf inside. Urian was furious. Wolfgang declared the wolf’s soul was his. The Devil stormed out. He slammed the door so hard that he cracked the ring.

The crack remains to this day. It is a reminder of the time Sankt Wolfgang tricked the Devil. The Hunter was denied his prey. The wolf was damned. Wolfgang’s wisdom prevailed.

Today, Sankt Wolfgang stands as a symbol. It represents faith, cunning, and the triumph of good over evil. Take a closer look at the walls. Imagine the Devil’s frantic work. Feel the weight of Wolfgang’s decision. See the crack in the door ring. Remember the legend. Sankt Wolfgang is more than just a church. It is a story etched in stone. It is a testament to the eternal battle between good and evil. This architectural style influenced Northern Germany and Hungary. As you leave Sankt Wolfgang, consider this. How do legends shape our understanding of faith and history?
