Lost in thought, imagine the echoes of centuries past swirling around us here at Sankt Viti. This unassuming church in Erfurt-Gispersleben holds secrets dating back to the early 14th century. Sankt Viti’s story began in 1319. That’s when the parish of Gispersleben-Viti was first mentioned in records. Back then, Erfurt belonged to the Bishopric of Mainz.

Now consider this. A Protestant pastor served both Kiliani and Viti churches from 1571. The church you see now is largely from a renovation in 1726. Its current design reflects that period. The tower’s cupola was updated in 1853 to the form we see today. Gispersleben became part of Erfurt in 1950. The Viti and Kiliani parishes merged in 1998.

Sankt Viti is simple. It features a hall with a polygonal east end. Parts of the original medieval structure still exist. Look closely at the exterior walls and the tower. The tower once had a gable roof. Now, it boasts an onion dome with a tall, two-story lantern.

Inside Sankt Viti, a flattened wooden barrel vault covers the space. Notice the pulpit altar. A two-story gallery wraps around three sides and includes an organ.

Speaking of the organ, it is special. Johann Georg Kummer built it around 1790 in Dachwig. It is one of his few surviving organs. The ornate organ case with carvings and vase-like decorations dates from after 1790. The Hesse organ workshop repaired the instrument in 1830. Later repairs in 1923 and 1982 altered the sound. Original parts were replaced with cheaper materials. The pitch was also changed. This affected its playability over time.

Restoration began in 2001. The bellows and key action were repaired first. From 2003 to 2004, Jörg Dutschke extensively restored the organ. The goal was to return it to its original state. The restored organ was re-dedicated on September 26, 2004. Sabine and Andreas Strobelt played a concert to celebrate.

Today, Sankt Viti stands as a testament to time. It embodies Gispersleben’s history. Its walls have seen centuries of change. Its organ has filled the space with music. It connects us to Erfurt’s past. Let us appreciate Sankt Viti. It is more than just a building. It is a living piece of Erfurt’s story.
