Founded in 1929 Sankt Theresien started as an independent parish. It was a time of great change. Many Catholics had moved to the area around Hamburg’s Holstenbahnhof. The St Joseph parish foresaw this growth. They bought land on Dohrnweg in 1919. This was a clever move. They planned a temporary church. It would later serve as a community center. Construction began on August 3 1929. The community worked hard. They finished the temporary church quickly. It opened on December 22 1929. It was dedicated to Saint Therese of Lisieux. Despite doubts about building a larger church they commissioned architect Kamps. The cornerstone of the new church was laid on Pentecost Sunday 1937. The building progressed quickly. A topping-out ceremony took place in July. Bronze bells were added in November. Bishop Berning consecrated the new Sankt Theresien church in 1938. It was during Laetare Sunday the fourth Sunday of Lent. Sankt Theresien was later incorporated into the St Joseph parish in 2005. This was part of a restructuring by the Archdiocese of Hamburg. But the legacy of Sankt Theresien remains. It stands as a testament to the faith and dedication of its community. This church played a vital part in the religious life of the Holstenbahnhof area. It continues to be a center of worship and community in Hamburg.
