Has anyone ever told you about the hidden gem on Brandenburg’s Dominsel? Right here, before us, stands the Sankt-Petri-Hospital. It’s not a hospital anymore, but its history is fascinating. The Sankt-Petri-Hospital first opened its doors in 1555, offering care and shelter to those in need. Imagine, just a stone’s throw from St. Peter and Paul, this place has witnessed centuries of Brandenburg’s history. The building itself tells a story. The unplastered facade, vibrant with yellow clinker bricks and red brick accents, whispers tales of its long life. Look closely at the central portal, framed by a three-stepped entrance and a segmented arch. Above it, white inscription stones mark significant years: 1555, its birth year; 1883, a time of major renovations; and 1993, a period of restoration that saved it from closure. The Sankt-Petri-Hospital served the community well into the 20th century, housing the elderly and needy even during the GDR era. Then, in 1980, the Evangelical Church transformed it into “cafe contact,” a social hub for people from all walks of life facing difficult situations. It became a sanctuary for political dissidents, former prisoners, and even homosexual self-help groups. A truly remarkable space in those times. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, cafe contact evolved into a youth center. The 1993 renovations not only preserved the historical building but also expanded its function. Today, inside the Sankt-Petri-Hospital, you’ll find offices, workshops, a computer room, and cozy common areas. Upstairs, a larger hall hosts events, keeping the spirit of community alive. The Sankt-Petri-Hospital’s journey from a humble shelter to a vibrant social center is a testament to its enduring mission of compassion and support.
